Singing in ecstasy to connect with divinity has been a valuable tradition prevalent in India.
The 12th century ‘Bhakti’ movement unified India culturally and aesthetically more than any political movement.
Addressing people in their own native language, reform was at the heart of its conscience and human dignity was its appeal. It transcended barriers of caste, religion, and social class.
For them devotion and surrender to the Supreme force was the only path to salvation…their Bhakti was not modest.. It was not timid/tepid but aggressive, not silent but visceral, and not covered but bare feet. They were mystic rebels with a cause. These were Our Singing Saints.
At a time when the world is witnessing turmoil with signs of foreboding which affects all of us, music laced with powerful lyrics keeps the promise of providing immense healing. Immortal poetry of Kabir, Thyaghraj, Tukaram, Bulehshah and Mirabaiwith lyrics that resonates with Gen Z, soulful music of Kirtan, Qawwali, Abhangs, and Gurbani will make the heart sing and unify the secular philosophy ofIndia and rich content will be served to connoisseurs of music.
